The value of cars depreciate fast after being sold. So, when you’re ready to buy a new car, your first thought is how much your car is going to be worth.
One of the deciding factors that will determine the trade-in value of your car is how well you took care of it.
According to Imperial Auto there are eight major factors that affect the price that you will get for your car. They are the popularity of the make and model of the vehicle, the year of first registration, the kilometre reading, the condition of the vehicle, a guarantee and service plan, service record, and accessories additional to the standard specifications.
A full service record and regular services are very important when it comes to the resale value of a car. It is therefore important to keep the manufacturer’s recommended service schedule up to date and to keep a record of it.
The appearance of the car is also very important. A small scratch or dent may not look to bad to you or perhaps you have become used to it, but it could affect the value of your car. Therefore try to park your car in a garage or under a lean-to at all times to protect it against the elements.
The inside of the car should also not be neglected. Try not to eat or drink in your car and if something is spilled, clean it immediately. Thoroughly clean the inside at least once a month. Products are available to remove any unpleasant smells.
Car buyers like options that simplify driving, such as ABS brakes, electric windows and remote controls. Buyers want safety and convenience; so, if you fit accessories it could raise the trade-in or resale value of your car.
When you have your car valued to get a trade-in or resale value, it is important to have the following at hand for the inspector: asking price, your ID or driver’s licence, a letter from your bank to confirm that the car has been paid off or the deed of settlement or the necessary proof if the car was bought cash, proof of address, the service record if available, all sets of car keys and any other important accessories such as a tracking device.
It could be that the dealer is not going to offer you a price for your car immediately and might want to do some research and compare prices before making an offer.
